manual install - environment trouble with $PATH

I have a systemd unit file that includes EnvironmentFile=-/opt/custom/etcd/bin/.etcd.env
that mentioned .etcd.env file contains a line setting an individual PATH for the etcd user export PATH=$PATH:/opt/custom/etcd/bin .

now starting etcd by systemd I get en error on that operation of exporting the custom PATH.
etcd.service: Ignoring invalid environment assignment 'export PATH=$PATH:/opt/custom/etcd/bin': /opt/custom/etcd/bin/.etcd.env

We are using similar mechanics for i.e. postgres, so this does not come out of nowhere.
Any idea, what my problems root cause may be?

my bad. misinterpretation of how systemd works.
Putting export and assignment in a single line does work in bash, but not for systemd. I guess it might be due to systemd being super posix compliant.

So splitting this in 2 separate lines is the solution here

PATH=$PATH:/opt/custom/etcd/bin
export PATH
