description field does not save

I have searched the existing issues, both open and closed, to make sure this is not a duplicate report.

The bug

It was happening in 1.129.x and currently still occurring on 1.131.3

for both videos and pictures, it appears that anything that i populate within the description field does not actually get saved, even though it prompts me that it has.

after closing the info bar and reopen to review the description, all the info is gone.

This also happens when attempting to perform the same steps via the iOS mobile app.

Reproduction steps

1. open a picture or video and add a description
2. let it save and show that it saved
3. close the info bar, and relaunch the info bar to review the description... its at this point that the info is missing.

@hctrr Looks like your external library is mounted as read only. Descriptions are written to the sidecar to not modify the original asset and this requires write permission. Can you confirm if you can reproduce the issue with an asset you have manually uploaded from the web / mobile app?

I do have it RO, correct.
so any modifications (edit picture location, date, etc.) none of that will be saved locally on my immich instance without write access? RO provides peace of mind.

Yes, all of those are written to the sidecar file alongside your original asset.

it was a long shot to keep my external library RO and still be able to add descriptions that will only be available on my immich instance.

if this is the way it's suppose to function - understood and we can close this issue.
