Characters not escaping

I'm printing the string "$intro$▪9▪tabtest▪9▪▪9▪▪9▪▪9▪tabtest▪9▪$intro$▪9▪▪9▪▪9▪▪9▪tabtest3$intro$";
which is just printing the escape character. How should I use these dots (▪)?

Do I need a byte array or something like that?
